A private jeep tour in Ramon Crater — four hours of discovery

Four hours give us time for coloured rock layers, far-reaching views, acacia trees and traces of the Incense Route. We stop, leave the jeep, look and ask questions, while the guiding connects the places into a larger story.

The jeep is reserved for your party only. The vehicle gives us access to the places of interest; local guiding gives meaning to what we find along the way.

What can you discover in four hours?

We start and finish in Mitzpe Ramon. Other nearby pick-up and finishing points can be arranged in advance.

Nahal Ramon and the coloured wall — understanding how the crater formed

After a short viewpoint stop at the top of Ma’ale Atzmaut, we descend into the crater and enter the tracks through Nahal Ramon. At the coloured wall, we use a model and visual explanations to explore how the crater formed and how its rock layers and colours came to be. The bands in the wall become a story you can recognise in the landscape around you.

Mount Gvanim and the acacias — the wider landscape and the life within it

We continue off-road to Mount Gvanim for a broad view of the crater. From here, the ridges, channels and layers we have seen close up begin to fit together. In Nahal Gvanim, we stop in the shade of an acacia for guiding about plants, wildlife and life in the desert. Wildlife may appear along the way, but sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Ein Saharonim, Khan Saharonim and Nahal Ardon — another layer of the story

We explore Ein Saharonim and Khan Saharonim, learning how water, people and desert trade routes are connected. We then follow part of the original Incense Route through Ma’ale Dekalim towards Nahal Ardon and its wall of geological dykes. The extra time lets us connect the crater’s geology with its natural life and human stories.

Other nearby pick-up and drop-off points can be arranged in advance.

The plants and wildlife of the crater

Acacias, other plants and wildlife add another layer to the view. We look at what we encounter and discuss life in a desert environment.

Before we set off

Will other guests join us?

No. This is a private tour for your party only. Tell us the number of participants and children’s ages so we can arrange the right vehicle.

How does it differ from the two-hour tour?

The two-hour tour focuses on Nahal Ramon, the coloured wall and Mount Gvanim. Four hours extend the route to Ein Saharonim, Khan Saharonim and Nahal Ardon, with more time for guiding and questions.

How much walking is there?

We leave the jeep and spend time outside during the guided stops. Tell us in advance about mobility difficulties or special requirements so we can discuss suitable arrangements.

What about water and coffee?

Please bring your own drinking water. Drinking water is also carried in the vehicles. On a four-hour tour, we can make time to prepare coffee according to your group’s wishes and the time available.

Looking for a different length of tour?

Two hours in the heart of the crater for a focused introduction without a hiking route, or a full day in Ramon Crater and the Zin Valley for up to eight hours. Read what guests say about the guiding.
