The best of both worlds

A private full-day jeep tour in Ramon Crater and the Zin Valley

From Ramon Crater’s rock layers and colours to the open Zin Valley and Ein Akev: a full day connecting two contrasting desert experiences. Explore how the crater formed, look out from Mount Gvanim and continue to the Zin Valley and a short walk to the spring. There is time to stop, observe and ask questions, with guiding that connects what you see along the way.

The jeep is reserved for your party only. The jeep gets us to the places we want to explore; your guide connects the geology, plants and desert life with what you see along the way.

Nahal Ramon and the coloured wall — reading the rock layers

After a viewpoint at the top of Ma’ale Atzmaut, we descend into the crater and enter Nahal Ramon. At the coloured wall, we discuss the origins of the colours, the sequence of layers and how the crater formed. The explanation adds context to the shapes and shades we see throughout the day.

The acacia, Shen Ramon and Nahal Ra’af — the journey is part of the story

Further along Nahal Ramon, we reach an old, solitary acacia. In its shade, we explore the tree’s story and life in the desert. We continue along part of the Israel National Trail towards Shen Ramon, crossing Nahal Ra’af and the natural gypsum layers of Givat Ra’af, then climb along the electricity-line track to Mount Gvanim.

Mount Gvanim and Gai Zohalim — connecting what we have seen

From Mount Gvanim, the crater opens out before us. The guiding helps you recognise the ridges and channels we have encountered close up. On the way back towards Mitzpe Ramon, we pass through colourful Gai Zohalim and climb Ma’ale Atzmaut, with the roadside layers now telling a familiar story.

The desert close up: wildlife and plants

Acacias, other plants and wildlife offer another way to understand the landscape. We look at what we encounter and discuss how life exists in this environment.

These photographs were taken on our tours in the area. Wildlife sightings, flowers and vegetation vary with the season, weather and what we encounter on the day.

On to the Zin Valley and Ein Akev

After the Ramon Crater section, a road journey of around half an hour brings us to the Sde Boker area. We descend through Sde Zin and Ma’ale Zin into the Zin Valley, then follow Nahal Akev towards the Ein Akev day parking area.

From the parking area, a short walk brings us to the spring. After the rock landscapes and channels, its water and vegetation offer a different view of the desert. Guests who wish to enter the water may do so according to the conditions on the day. We then return through Nahal Zin to Sde Boker and, according to the agreed finishing point, on to Mitzpe Ramon.

If we include Ein Akev: the walk takes about 10 minutes each way and has no shade. Shade around the spring also varies with the hour and season. The pool is very deep—more than 7 metres. Swimming is at guests’ own responsibility; children must be closely supervised by their parents or accompanying adults.

Before a full day in the desert

Who is a full day for?

Visitors who want to devote a day to the desert and combine Ramon Crater with the Zin Valley and Ein Akev. Up to eight hours include driving, guiding, viewpoints and the short walk to the spring.

Is it private?

Yes. The jeep is reserved for your party. Tell us the number of participants, children’s ages and walking preferences when we plan the outing.

How is this different from the four-hour tour?

The four-hour tour focuses on Ramon Crater and continues to Ein Saharonim, Khan Saharonim and Nahal Ardon. The full-day tour offers a different route within the crater and adds the Sde Boker area, the Zin Valley and a short walk to Ein Akev. The stops are described on each page so you can choose according to the places you would like to get to know.

Is there walking?

We leave the jeep for guiding and viewpoints, and there is a short walk from the day parking area to Ein Akev. Tell us about walking difficulties or special requirements before we plan the route. Bring personal drinking water; drinking water is also carried in the vehicles.

Where do we start and return?

Mitzpe Ramon or Sde Boker, as agreed with you. Other nearby pick-up and drop-off points can be arranged in advance.
